Don't let Mice Destroy Your Engine!
I was recently asked to diagnosis an engine failure for an engine from my Mother in Law. It was a 14HP Briggs and Stratton Intek Engine in a Craftsman Lawn Tractor made by American Yard Products.
It was clear to me that the engine broke the connecting rod.
After removing the engine from the Tractor and removing the shroud this is what I found:
A mice nest! As you can see this nest blocked the cooling fins and cause the engine to overheat causing the connecting rod to break.
To prevent this put dryer sheets (The sheets you put in your clothes dryer to make your clothes smell wonderful) around your tractor when not in use or stored for an extended period of time. Mice don't like the smell and will avoid turning your engine into their home.
So after you rebuild your Kohler K Engine and restore your beautiful vintage garden tractor, put dryer sheets all over the tractor then store it so these pests don't destroy your hard work!
Thank you for saving the tractors!
